How much do wedding cakes cost?

Buckinghamshire Wedding Cakes

As someone who supplies bespoke wedding cakes in Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties, I meet couples with varying budgets for their wedding cake.

Although our aim at The Rose Cake Parlour is to cater for people on different budgets, we do have minimum prices for each size of wedding cake (please see our ordering page) due to the fact that we use premium quality ingredients such as Belgian chocolate and Swiss sugarpaste which not only give our wedding cakes an extremely fine finish but ensure that they taste as wonderful as they look.

How much do wedding cakes cost?

This is the most common question any wedding cake supplier is asked, and the answer is not as straightforward as some people might think! As with anything bespoke, the cost of your wedding cake depends on many factors, such as the size, flavour, and design complexity.

Some of the most important factors that influence the cost of a wedding cake are discussed below.

Number and depth of tiers

The first thing that would determine the price of your wedding cake is the number of tiers that are required. You may think that this is only determined by the number of guests, but in fact it is your venue that is perhaps the most important factor that should be taken into consideration when deciding upon the number of tiers to have on your wedding cake. If you are getting married in a venue such as Poundon House, then we would recommend at least a 3 tier wedding cake on a tall cake stand so that it stands out in such a beautiful and traditional venue. However, if you are getting married in a rustic barn or marquee with fewer guests then a two tier cake would be absolutely fine.

It’s not just the number of tiers that is taken into account by wedding cake makers when they give you a quote, but also the depth of each tier. These days the standard depth of each tier in the wedding cake industry is at least 5″-6″, which not only makes for a far more elegant centrepiece but also means that the size of each portion is a lot more generous; and depending on how the cake is actually cut you may even get extra servings out of each tier.

Number of servings required

Needless to say, if you plan to serve your wedding cake to 300 guests you would need a pretty big cake that would obviously cost more!

Having said that, it is important to remember that not everyone will want cake after their meal and you may end up with excessive amounts of cake on your hands! However, there are ways to avoid this problem and thus reduce waste but this would require further discussion as it depends on each wedding – please contact us if you would like further advice.

Design

It is easy to underestimate the time it takes to prepare a pretty wedding cake. On top of the baking, filling, coating and icing of each tier (which is a 1-2 day process) you have the final decorating stage, which can easily take up to 15 hours or more!

Intricate patterns and handmade flowers will both increase the price of your wedding cake, as they take a considerable amount of time – a single large rose can take anything from 2 to 5 hours to make! That said, the end result is truly stunning and the flowers can be kept for a lifetime, so it is worth spending a little extra money on a precious memento of your wedding day.
