How Big Should My Wedding Cake Be?

Wedding Cake Maker in Milton Keynes

These days weddings vary greatly in their theme, style and size, and as a wedding cake maker in Milton Keynes I have provided wedding cakes for very different styles of wedding, with varying numbers of guests.

Most people assume that they should order a wedding cake big enough to serve all of their guests. This might be a good idea if you are having up to 120 guests, as a 3 tier wedding cake would provide enough servings for everyone and in case there is any left over the amount to finish off would be a lot more manageable than the leftovers from a 5 tier giant!

I previously discussed the importance of height in my last blog post, and this is something that I still stand by – however, your wedding cake can be a tall and elegant centrepiece by incorporating dummy or ‘fake’ tiers, (undistinguishable from the real thing), into the design. Doing so will help reduce waste and a lot of unnecessary stress caused by excessive amounts of leftover cake!

If you are going to have more than 150 guests at your wedding, there are a number of things you should consider when deciding on the size of your wedding cake in terms of portion numbers. Some of these are discussed below, but please contact me if you are looking for a wedding cake maker in Milton Keynes and would like advice specific to your wedding.

1.) The time that your wedding cake will be served

As with anything, timing really is the key! If you are planning to serve your cake after your wedding breakfast you need to consider whether or not your guests would want cake after their meal. Because my cake tiers are at least 5 inches in height (unless the design calls for less height on some of the tiers), each portion is far more generous than average, making a single serving pretty rich:

In order to reduce waste, it might be a good idea to allow your guests to help themselves to your wedding cake. I have seen a number of weddings where this has been done so it is definitely worth checking with your venue if this is a possibility.

2.) Cultural considerations

From my conversations with most couples, I have found that this point is especially important for Asian weddings, where there is often a huge variety of cultural desserts and the wedding cake is just an addition! Because of the size of Asian weddings you would most definitely need a tall cake so that it stands out, but not necessarily enough cake to serve all your guests – in this case going for dummy tiers would definitely be a good idea!
